‘Overdrive’ the debut single from Newcastle native Kristy James was born out of frustration and sending a message of not giving in. At a time when Kristy felt her hands were tied and her options were limited she put pen to paper resulting in this fiery country-rock track.
Assembling a star-studded cast for her first professional outing, the track was produced by Hillbilly Hut’s Simon Johnson (Adam Harvey, Travis Collins, Buddy Goode), guitars and banjo courtesy of Glen Hannah, drums – Pete Drummond, fiddle - Mick Albeck, steel – Dave Ristrim, bass – Simon Johnson with backing vocals by Mike Carr & Aleyce Simmonds. The accompanying video clip was produced by Golden Guitar winning producer Glenn Wilson (Felicity Urquhart’s ‘Big Black Cloud’).

Kristy started singing and performing at the age of 11 and was a Tuesday night regular at the Steel City Country Music Club. At the age of 14 she started her own business organising school discos and once Kristy turned 18 she started performing every weekend and hasn’t stopped for the past 10 years, under agents EAO and Whirlwind Entertainment Kristy has performed all over NSW as part of a duo/trio (Kadence) and band (Funhouse). She has taught at Showbiz Talent School, Rosie’s School Of Rock and also offers private singing tuition.
Citing Carrie Underwood as a musical influence, Kristy has also been working on new songs for her debut EP due for release in 2013 with friend and loyal supporter Dave Leslie of The Baby Animals and co-writing with the likes of Mike Carr, Troy Kemp and Marty Worrall.

‘Everybody Thinks I’m Lonely’, the brand new radio single from The Harmonators is another gem from Jay O’Shea (female half of husband and wife duo O’Shea) and Troy Johnson (Sara Evans, Keith Urban) – the title track from their self proclaimed, aptly titled 2nd album, “Big Mouth” was also penned by this song writing team. A tongue-in-cheek tale, it’s a fun take on what it is to be a single girl.
“I don’t know why everybody thinks I’m lonely, don’t they know I love staying home, crying on the phone, waking up shaking from sleeping all alone every night... though I don’t mind”
J. O’Shea & T. Johnson, Everybody Thinks I’m Lonely, 2012
The girls live by the philosophy of taking their music, not themselves, very seriously and believe this beautifully crafted song was the best vehicle for them to demonstrate this belief.
Being recently nominated for the first time in the CMAA Country Music Awards Of Australia – Group Or Duo Of The Year category, the Australian Institute Of Music graduates continue to pinch themselves. Rae summed up the duo’s feelings, "Being nominated was a great honour, it is something you always wish and hope for with any new release, but to achieve this goal was really special, especially considering we were nominated in a category with people whose music and talent we admire".
While they didn’t walk away with the Golden Guitar, this year’s Tamworth Country Music Festival was one of their most successful and rewarding to date. Their main, ticketed show was an opportunity for a bunch of friends, Tracy Killeen and Sally-Anne Whitten, who each had their unique brand of country music to come together and create a listening feast full of stories, strong female vocals, harmonies and bucket loads of 'Lipstick, Lyrics And Laughter' – the name of their Tamworth show.
The musical twosome now sets their sights on touring including upcoming dates at the 2013 Coastal Country Music Easter main concert (Nambucca Heads) in March, Coonabarrabran Fire Relief Concert in April and the Inaugural Broadbeach Country Music Festival in June. While Rae will be keeping her eye on the winners’ announcement of the APRA Professional Development Awards – from 1500 entries, she is now amongst the artists that have made it to the second round of judging. With their new album, time melts and the band that refused to conform while leaving a feel-good impression on their audiences, has once again found the way to make genre-defying soul music.
“Their mix of Latin horns and rhythms, crisp telecaster leads and the Roy Orbison-like voice of Raul Malo remains as engaging as ever,” according to the Associated Press.
While the four-star review from the Los Angeles Times says, “singer-songwriter Raul Malo and his Nashville-based compatriots draw freely, and joyously, from regional cultures spanning North and South America on a collection that will be hard to top as the year's most scintillating pop music outing.
During a two-hour sold-out show last night (2/25), fans were given a taste of The Mavericks’ flair at New York’s famed Bowery Ballroom. On Friday (3/1), they are slated to perform “Come Unto Me” on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, which airs on NBC at 11:35P ET/10:35P CT.
Even before its official release, the project has already earned critical acclaim from some of the top music reviewers.
Country Weekly insists it is, “laden with hooky beats, blaring horns and the Orbisonesque voice of Raul." The Oakland Press hails the album as, “…characteristically broad and bold, bringing the Mavericks back just ‘In Time’ and certainly well worth waiting for.” The Salt Lake Tribune believes IN TIME, “…resurrects the best ingredients of the ‘country’ band that began in Miami and embraced a style that not only honored Buck Owens and Patsy Cline but incorporated Tex-Mex as well as dynamic Cuban rhythms.”
IN TIME debuted in Australia last month (1/18) and was a Top 20 album. Australia’s Rhythms raves, "the band sounds better than The Traveling Wilburys' wildest dreams...fronted by a Cuban Roy Orbison...I can't think of another band that can take the listener back to the golden days of rock 'n' roll without deliberately trying to sound retrospective."
In the UK earlier this month, the album peaked at #2 on iTunes UK Country store (just under Taylor Swift's RED) and is the #1 best-selling Country album on Amazon UK.
Q Magazine in the UK gave the album a four-star review saying the guys are, "back after a nine-year siesta, Miami's retro-nuevo-Tejano-mariachi-country-rock hyphanates sound refreshed, recharged and better than ever." BBC Radio 2, the UK’s largest radio station, has already added “Back In Your Arms Again” to its playlist and Mexico City’s most listened to Pop station, Alfa Radio, has named The Mavericks as their “Artist of the Month.”
AUSTRALIA’S FAVOURITE COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL
Gympie Music Muster
August 22 - 25
2013 FIRST ARTIST ANNOUNCEMENT
The Gympie Music Muster is set to rocket to exceptional heights in 2013 with the announcement that THE MAVERICKS have been secured as the international headliners, when the community comes together to celebrate Australia’s Favourite Country Music Festival in its 32nd year!
Known as “the most interesting band in the world”, there is absolutely no question THE MAVERICKS are the most entertaining as they fuse traditional country with rock ‘n roll, in their killer-cool Tex-Mex style, season it with saxophones and lashings of hot Latino – a mix that has been slaying audiences for decades, but never in Australia …’til now. This exclusive festival appearance is not to be missed!
‘Oh What A Thrill’, ‘There Goes My Heart’, ‘Dance The Night Away,’ ‘What A Cryin’ Shame’… the hits just keep on rolling, and their Main Stage appearance will be among the most unforgettable ever presented anywhere.
CMAA Golden Guitar winners litter the 2013 Gympie Music Muster line-up, including both the Male and Female Artist of The Year. Newly crowned Male Artist of the Year, TROY CASSAR-DALEY will perform songs from his award winning Home album, while Female Artist of the Year, CATHERINE BRITT, will showcase her current landmark release Always Never Enough which earned seven nominations in the January Awards.
TAMARA STEWART will be warmly welcomed back after a lengthy hiatus. She landed with a bang, picking up the Vocal Collaboration of the Year Golden Guitar for ‘Women in Song,’ sharing the honour with SARA STORER who will have a keenly anticipated new album to showcase when she joins us on stage.
CHELSEA BASHAM launched her album Make My Own Sunshine at the Muster last year and proudly returns this year as Golden Guitar winner of Best New Talent.
In what can only be described as a major coup, the Gympie Music Muster has confirmed global sensations SLEEPY MAN BANJO BOYS from New Jersey, USA. With a combined age younger than Lee Kernaghan, ten year old banjo picker Jonny Mizzone, along with his brothers Robbie (13) on fiddle and Tommy (14) on guitar, burst onto the US music scene following their debut appearance on The David Letterman Show. A YouTube video of the boys practicing Earl Scruggs's ‘Flint Hill Special’ has been viewed more than 2 million times and they’ve become the darlings of media and bluegrass fans who can’t get enough of them.
SLEEPY MAN BANJO BOYS are guaranteed to have both the audience and musicians mesmerised when they hit the stage at the Gympie Music Muster this August.
Lovers of traditional country music won’t be disappointed in 2013. The inclusion of this year’s winner of the Bush Ballad of the Year Golden Guitar, GRAHAM RODGER, is sure to please his many fans.
KEVIN WELCH is back by popular demand for his third return to the Amamoor Creek State Forest. Everyone who’s seen him before will make it difficult for those who haven’t to get close. It will be standing room only for this unassuming icon of Alt-country, Blues and Roots music.
