“Borrowed Tunes” is the fourth solo album from Sydney artist Corrina Steel released on her independent label Snakedrive Records. The result is a collection of 13 songs including Kris Kristofferson, Tammy Wynette, Linda Ronstadt, Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson and Peter Allen. And of course, a couple of Steel’s favourite trad country gospel tunes thrown in for good measure. It’s a stripped back, seductive, intimate, at times rock-edged, as well as country so classic, it sounds like a jukebox in the corner of a Memphis diner in 1950.

“Our only rule was that there are no rules. Nothing was too corny, nothing was too cool. We just didn’t care as long as we could give it a sound that was unique and authentic. I spent a fair amount of time going through my vinyl and songs just kept popping up. Mike Anderson was not at all fazed by being the lone ranger creating the musical backdrop for Steel’s vocals. In fact he loved it. “I really enjoyed the process of stripping these songs back, going through the layers to find the essence, then condensing that into as few instruments as possible. I like the space created when you record this way. It gives the music a late night atmosphere that we really love.”

“Borrowed Tunes” was recorded in a few weekends at a semi-rural retreat in NSW. “I’ve got half of an originals album in the can but wanted to do this little in-between album because I had so much fun just being a singer on all these beautifully written songs. Usually I write and produce the albums I’ve made. But this time it felt great to just be a singer. Like how all my old school heroes used to do it. Of course having such a great guitar player who just gets it every time, made it all so easy. And an engineer I can 100 per cent trust, really meant I was free to just belt it out. ”

‘I reckon those songs you hear on the radio in the back seat of the car in the first ten years of your life have a huge effect on your musical tastes forever,” says Steel.

Originally designed to be a musical magnet to draw tourists flocking to Grafton’s nationally-acclaimed Jacaranda Festival, the first annual Clarence Valley Country Muster has become a massive drawcard in its own right.

The stage is set. The muster will open on a property a few kilometres north-west of Grafton on October 28 and swing through until November 3.

Organiser Wendy Gordon owns the property in the tiny and historic settlement of Calliope – a village that once hosted the surrounding district’s first race meeting in 1872.

The horses have long gone, and the contemporary cattle have been ushered off the property as it prepares for an event never before seen in these parts.

For Wendy Gordon, it’s an unexpected blockbuster.

“I’ve organised country music festivals before, but I honestly wasn’t prepared for the response to a muster in my own back yard,” Wendy says. “I first But events like this don’t happen by accident. Wendy Gordon has worked her Akubra off promoting the muster to the rest of Australia. It has been a shotgun blast heard everywhere.

Nearby villages like Ulmarra, Brushgrove, Yamba, Maclean and the City of Grafton itself will prosper from the hospitality business the muster generates.

On stage will be headliners

Ted Egan, Terry Gordon, the Kross Kutt Showband, Marge Graham and more than 20 other performers singing under the stars.

There’ll be a giant marquee, a first-class stage, extensive lighting, portable toilets, camping sites for motor homes and separate areas set aside for the media, VIP guests and site workers.

High energy country musician Mick Lindsay will headline the 20th Anniversary of the Julia Creek Dirt n Dust Festival next April 11-13, 2014.

Lindsay filmed the music video for Crank It at the annual Dirt n Dust Festival in 2011 and says he is looking forward to returning to his favourite Outback event, hopefully with his long-awaited debut album in hand.

“I’ve been busy writing songs and speaking with producers this year and really hope to have the album finished and ready for release before next year’s Dirt n Dust Festival,” said Lindsay.

“The Dirt n Dust Festival is a great platform for showcasing everything my band and I can do and, if all goes to plan, it will play a big part in launching the next step of my career.

“I love the crowd that turns up to Julia Creek every year and the atmosphere is second to none. Everyone who’s there is there to have a good time and that’s really important because every gig is 50 per cent the performer and 50 per cent the crowd. It doesn’t matter who you are, a good audience will always be the difference between a good show and an unforgettable show,” Lindsay said.

President of the Dirt n Dust Festival, Stephen Malone said he looks forward to welcoming Lindsay back to Julia Creek.

“Mick has performed at Dirt n Dust twice already and has stamped himself in the hearts of many of our regular Festival-goers,” said Mr Malone.

“When it came to choosing a musician for our 20th celebrations, Mick was a no-brainer. He has a diverse musical repertoire and can shift effortlessly between country, rock and pop to get the crowd dancing and keep them dancing.”
