CANYON, a blend of American Alt Country, Folk and Westcoast harmony launch their debut self-titled album at the Van. They perform originals inspired by the ‘Laurel Canyon – Westcoast’ tradition of the 60s and 70s. The album features their signature four-part harmonies set in songs about deserts, forests, raging water, open highways and broken hearts.
CANYON blends acoustic and electric instruments, at times singing around a single condenser mic in a traditional Bluegrass style.
Formed in 2015 by singer, songwriter and guitarist Peter Chapman, CANYON features Louise Dempsey (yes, Paul’s sister), with Bruce Packard (Coolgrass, Concordia Mandolin Orchestra), Josh Bennett (The Bombay Royale) and Robi Parolin (Aus Bee Gees Show).
The eight- track ‘LP’ includes five original songs with three Canyon interpretations: Ohio – Neil Young, Sin City – Gram Parsons / Chris Hillman and Pretty Maids all in a row – Joe Walsh. Track two Willow is the debut co-write for Chapman / Dempsey. The other four being Chapman-penned songs.
The album was recorded at Sing Sing South by Adam Rhodes (Paul Kelly, Renee Geyer, Joe Camilleri, Diesel, The Waifs, Angus & Julia Stone, Cat Empire). It was mixed by Adam on Pro Tools, mastered by Ross Cockle (Split Enz, Australian Crawl, Midnight Oil, The Black Sorrows, Paul Kelly, David Bridie, Clare Bowditch, Archie Roach, Tina Arena, Daryl Braithwaite) at Sing Sing. Production by Peter Chapman and Adam Rhodes. Dion Hirini (Vika & Linda Bull, Etta James Show) contributed acoustic and electric guitars and vocals on the album.
