Texan born and raised singer-songwriter Robert Ellis and The Perfect Strangers, along with fellow troubadours Joshua Hedley and Joe Pug play a special OUT ON THE WEEKEND sideshow at Meeniyan.
ROBERT ELLIS recently released his eponymous fourth album, with the 11-song set is his most personal statement yet and a summation of his career thus far. The album has received many accolades and was given a 4/5 star review by Rolling Stone Magazine and Spin Magazine calling is “A masterful intersection of emotion and musicianship, Robert Ellis is one of 2016’s finest.” The new album follows Ellis’ critically acclaimed 2014 release, The Lights From The Chemical Plant. Racking up multiple year-end accolades, NPR selected it as one of their “50 Favorite Albums of 2014,” calling him a “major sonic storyteller” and Rolling Stone called it “a fully realized masterpiece.” Esquire declared it one of the best of the year and Buzzfeed hailed him as one of “25 New Artists You Need In Your Life In 2015.” His touring band The Perfect Strangers (Kelly Doyle, guitar, Geoffrey Muller, bass, Will Van Horn, pedal steel guitar & Michael “Tank” Lisenbe, drums) will also be joining in him here in Australia.
JOSHUA HEDLEY, who has toured Australia with Justin Townes Earle and Jonny Fritz and recently completed a co-headlining Australian tour with Willie Watson, will be back at Out On The Weekend but this time stepping out front and centre as the star of his show with his own brand of traditional country music and his pure sweet country voice. The Music described his recent live performance as “Rich and hanging heavy with intent on murder ballads or sweet resignation on tear-stained ballads, he knows his way around real-deal country music.”
Chicago born and raised JOE PUG also makes a long overdue return having not been in our part of the planet since 2012. In that time Joe wrote, recorded and released his third and critically acclaimed album Windfall, a 10-song indie-folk gem that has cemented his reputation as one of America’s most respected young songwriters. On it’s 2015 release it was met with high praise with The Australian describing it as “absolutely brilliant.” As Paste Magazine commented “Windfall is an album about not just the broken moments and uphill climbs that shape life, but how to exist in those moments, how to draw on core strengths and adapt, how to live through it all and come out stronger.” Agreed.
